  • “We are a cultural activation center, so we’re definitely gonna be having more watch parties, trivia nights, DJs, artists, musicians, and parties.”

  • “Operating a sports facility is no easier or harder than operating a business, but operating a business, as it turns out, is pretty hard.”
  • “Every single thing should have a plan for maintenance and what to do when it breaks, because it will break at the most critical moment.”

The Origins of Ballers

Before the stunning 55,000-square-foot facility opened its doors, Ballers started as a temporary outdoor pickleball pop-up in the parking lot. This early initiative served as a crucial trial run and a billboard for the brand, allowing the team to test their software, interact with the community, and generate excitement. By building the community first—even hosting a puppy birthday party on the outdoor courts—Ballers ensured there was a built-in demand before the massive indoor facility was complete.

Cross-Pollinating Social Sports

One of the core philosophies at Ballers is the power of cross-pollination. By housing pickleball, padel, squash, golf simulators, and a turf field under one roof, they can introduce players to new sports they might not have otherwise tried. A hardcore pickleball player might transition to squash for a more rigorous cardiovascular workout, while a golfer might stick around to try padel. By guiding guests through different spaces and hosting crossover events, Ballers maximizes the lifetime value of their members and ensures the facility remains vibrant and active across all demographics.

Historic Renovations and Creative Flex Spaces

Building a modern sports facility inside a 1928 power plant presents unique challenges, particularly when it comes to ceiling heights and column spacing required for sports like padel. However, the Ballers team leaned into the historic chic aesthetic, finding creative solutions rather than viewing the space as a limitation. They designed the facility to be highly flexible, allowing the 10,000-square-foot pickleball area to transform into a massive ballroom for corporate events, or utilizing the padel courts as photo booths and satellite bars. This adaptability allows them to host high-profile events, such as the Philadelphia Eagles’ ring ceremony, while maximizing their square footage for revenue generation.

Operational Tech and SaaS Solutions

When outfitting a multi-faceted facility, the temptation is often to find or build a single, all-in-one software solution. The Ballers team recognized early on that no single platform could perfectly manage the nuances of a restaurant, a gym, court bookings, and VIP memberships simultaneously. Instead, they opted for specialized SaaS products that solve core problems within each specific department. The operational focus is now on building bridges between these systems. Ultimately, Alex emphasizes that perfect software settings are secondary to a hospitality-driven staff whose primary goal is to ensure every guest leaves feeling better than when they arrived.

Balancing VIP and Public Experiences

Ballers successfully navigates the delicate balance between offering exclusive, luxury amenities—like cold plunges, saunas, and VIP lounges—while remaining open and accessible to the public. Their approach is rooted in universal hospitality: every person who walks through the door is treated as special, whether they are a high-paying VIP expecting perfection or a local resident coming in for a free promotional clinic. This commitment to an exceptional customer experience is what separates Ballers from a standard sports warehouse, cementing its reputation as a premier destination for both elite athletes and casual players alike.
